On the 5th of October this year, Saturn moved into Scorpio having spent the last two and a half years exalted in Libra (since November 2009).
In its journey through rational Libra, the ultimate diplomat and power-broker, (think Churchill), Saturn has been instrumental in crucial International relations, as the role of the United Nations came under question in many war-torn and conflicting countries. Also under the sharp investigative eye of father Saturn a questioning of the institution of marriage (Libra) in Western society (with same sex marriage becoming legal in some places and deeply dividing other places of governance).
Librans are breathing a sigh of relief as the great taskmaster leaves their charming, light-filled, heady domain, and tracks for the deep waters of Scorpio.
The great Reaper is going into the depths of our collective consciousness as it traverses the magnetic and powerfully transformative waters of Scorpio. It sounds ominous, the notion of Saturn’s ‘reality-check’ taking place in those very depths which we find so difficult to meet in others as well as ourselves. In truth it is a reassessment of some of our deeper values, and a questioning of what the collective soul now needs to face up to, amongst other issues: the finite resources and fragile environment of our planet.
The last time Saturn was in Scorpio (1982-85) we were faced with the AIDS epidemic, as sexual liberation which had been so heartily won in the sixties, (during the last dance between Uranus and Pluto) and then lived out in the mainstream of the seventies got firmly reined in by Saturn as we all experienced loss and grief even if not directly, everyone was powerfully moved to question subterranean prejudices and moral values, which eventually led us to heart-openings like we haven’t experienced before in our post modern world. (the ‘Dove’ aspect of Scorpio)
However this time we have a friendly sextile from Saturn to Pluto, as well as a trine to Neptune. Saturn and Pluto are also in mutual reception, (they are in each other’s signs) this can be seen as a collaboration between these two planets which can bring a profound healing through facing up to the limitation of our shared earthly resources, as well as the sorting out of the massive debts and imbalances. Even though this can’t happen painlessly, the productive sextile between the two powerful planets and their signs: Scorpio and Capricorn, could mean the outcomes will be sustainable in the longer term.
In the meantime Saturn’s trine to Neptune and Chiron in Pisces gives us the opportunity to face up to old wounds, relatively easily as the soft aspect means there is almost a natural and timely process in which we can look at our deepest fears, and transmute them into investigative curiosity (Pluto), and in the words of Byron Katie, ask “Is this really true?”.
Jupiter in its journey through Gemini, has just gone retrograde and will go forward again at the end of January 2013. This in itself is not unusual, it does so every year, but I see it as helpful at this time of internal journeying and the quest for realistic values, collectively and personally, as we begin to navigate the deep waters of Scorpio and her quest for transformation, with Saturn’s austere scrutinizing ways as our modis operandi.
On another note of change, (less long term, but nevertheless important) Mars went into Sagittarius, (for the next six weeks), so I recommend processing the internal quest by keeping physically active, expanding boundaries, strengthening the body to promote energetic cellular activity so as to keep pace with the changes for this new world we are moving into.
For Scorpio natives or for those who have planets in Scorpio, use this next two and a half years as a time to take stock. Call upon your sword of discernment and de-clutter your life of material things, but also of friends or acquaintanceships which don’t support you positively, in this important growth period. Look after your skin, bones and teeth (Saturn), take care of the older people in your life, and keep an eye on assets you have invested with other people.

The outer planets and how they are transforming our collective consciousness
As you are well aware, we are living in hugely energetic times with many profound changes taking place. People are either feeling overwhelmed, and left out/behind, or are reeling with the endless expanding possibilities opening up in ways never dreamt of before. These times are certainly not for the faint-hearted, and if you believe that your Soul chose to incarnate at this time for the very purpose of this enormous evolutionary process, then you will be reading these words and nodding in recognition.
All the signs are of a species healing, as the revolutionary and evolutionary outer planetary configurations dominate our solar system, and shake up our consciousness.
This big shift in consciousness has been unfolding since the French revolution when the great awakener, Uranus was first seen in the late seventeenth century, its existence later confirmed by Sir William Herschel who observed the planet on March 13, 1781. Ever since then our awareness of its presence has shown us that our evolutionary drives as a species have often manifested as revolutions.
One of the most popular awakenings in recent times has been the big shift which started in the mid-sixties. Many of us remember, or have heard our parents talking about that extraordinary decade. There was ground shaking change in governments, as ideologies were put into practice (eg Cuba),women’s role in the work place, and in very obvious ways throughout popular culture. It was an enormously liberating time. I was a young teenager and remember the powerful momentum as we took to the streets to protest injustices and wars. We knew we were all part of a bigger movement and as Bob Dylan so eloquently said in his song ‘The times they are a’changin’, “Get out of the new world if you can’t lend a hand…”
The powerful Uranus and Pluto were in conjunction in Virgo. Uranus shaking and quaking our values; Pluto, ruler of collective memories and imprints deeply embedded in our DNA, together transforming the way we lived on the planet.
Then the seventies and eighties came, and it was almost like all the new awareness got swept under the carpet, as we grappled with the petrol crises and then the overblown materialism of the eighties.
By the late eighties and into the early nineties many of us recognized that deep species-level healing, was much needed, and with the assistance of Neptune and Uranus conjunctions of 1993, offering us the opportunity to heal core emotions and Soul memories, we did a lot of Soul searching and personal transformation, which has laid the groundwork for the current imperative of self-enquiry, and spirituality.
Neptune went into its home-sign Pisces in February this year, and we can assume that a big collective refining and healing process is happening for the next thirteen years or so.
Some of us already taste the mystical and magical lyrical reality of ourselves as One and inextricably part of the Cosmos. Yet we must take responsibility for our own versions of reality on this plane, so as to allow the deepening of compassion and unconditional love. (Neptune in Pisces).
Deepening the profound species-level healing is the conjunction of Chiron with Neptune, since 2007, which held us while we cleaned our wounds from generations and generations of battling each other. The wounding still goes on now, yet through the media (Neptune) we are all so conscious of it and working it into our own personal healing process.
And now in our ideally more interdependent state, we have the cumulative effects of the Uranus/Pluto conjunction from the sixties, as these two planets dance together again, only this time in a square, which is more dynamic and challenging than the cheek-to-cheek waltz they did in the sixties. The violence of the Arab Spring, the power of the Occupy movement, the relentless exposure of shameless greed is much more extreme than the flow of the sixties seemed.
We are having seven of these squares over the next three and half years. The last time we had a square between these two planets was the waning square in the thirties which saw the depression and devastating financial crises’, leading to WWll. This time with Pluto in Capricorn and Uranus in Aries, we have already seen the fall of many of our financial institutions, and we’re likely to see more. However, this is a waxingsquare which is usually harbinger for the new. We are breaking through to another level of consciousness in our evolution, a leap forward as I see it. The last time this happened was around five hundred years ago in the late Renaissance, which heralded an explosion of the arts and culture in general. This coupled with the Mayan calendar dates, which predict a huge shift in consciousness the end of a way of being in the world, and heralds massive change.
I think most of us will agree that the model which is passing, does not work, and needs to be purged for the true values of the Aquarian age to be lived. Uranus, ruler of Aquarius, the sign of brotherhood and humanity is heralding evolution and in fact its square ‘dance’ with Pluto, means that deeply buried truths are surfacing now, and the new age is on our doorstep.
